Notes Traveler - first impressions

Colleague Andrew Vina (alias) did a good job this weekend, a few hours after we finally received the download URL he installed a new server and put the Notes 8.0.1 Traveler software on-top.
A few hours later he started to send his usual SMS messages in pure triumph, and a few minutes later he realized that he might as well send them via Notes mail from his mobile device.

So - what's his first impressions?

1) It's quite simple to install and configure this software
2) And it really works !
3) The lack of symbian support makes it necessary for us europeans to maintain two different push-mail products, at least until Traveler supports Nokia & Sony Ericsson.
4) This version of Notes Traveler seems to lack more advanced features, like encryption and remote kill of lost/stolen devices.
5) Andrew is worried about the sync intervals, it seems that the mobile device might be polling the server at a fixed rate and therefore might cause you an astonishing telephone bill, but we don't know that for sure yet. (It does sound stupid, so we don't really think it's made that way)

Having said all that: Yepp, we both have a good feeling about this. It's not rocket science, and it certainly lack some of the more advanced features you find in for instance mSuite, but it seems to do the job. It's just to install a new 8.0.1 server (Windows), open the ports 80, 443 and 8642 in your firewall, and there you go.

More about this when we have tested it more thoroughly.

PS.
Remember to upgrade the design of your NAB til ver. 8.0.1. There's a few new Traveler specific settings there that you might need.

Thanks for the review!

If you are worried about the client constantly polling the server looking for updates you can switch to SMS notifcation which pings your client when there is an update which then kicks off the sync. Best to have an unlimited SMS plan for that though :-)
